Blackbrook Open Age switch to Summer Rugby
Blackbrook Open Age Section has taken the bold decision to switch to Summer Rugby.
It was a decision the club has taken after consulting other clubs in the North West Counties Premier Division, the coaching staff at the club and the players.
Media Manager Dave Hunt commented we only started to talk about the possibility of moving since our Lancashire Cup Final against Bank Quay Bulls who have already made the switch. We then heard Ashton Bears and Pilkingtons had decided to go for it.
After that we made several calls to other clubs we play in The North West Counties and the impression we got is that the majority of the clubs are going to go the same way.
We needed to act quickly as the deadline for entering the inaugural competition was fast approaching. The Coaching Staff at the club were 100% behind the switch as were the players also.
Summer Rugby is the way the game is going the players will be able to train and play in better conditions and we hope to able attract bigger crowds to turn out and watch exiting games of skilful open rugby on warm weekend instead of a cold and wet one.
The club also had to think of the future because all youth rugby is now summer based we had to consider the fact that when the youth players of today come through to the open age will they want to start training and playing in Winter months should we remain or would we loose players to our local rivals who have made the switch.
It was an easy decision to make at the end of the day.
We have had a great time in The North West Counties and it will be sad to leave but we are looking forward to the new challenge ahead. The club is committed to finishing The North West Counties season and hopefully with a trophy before kicking off The North West Mens League in late April.
